Kuwait National Day falls on 25 February of every Gregorian year, commemorating Sheikh Abdullah Al-Salem Al-Sabah's accession to power in 1950. Kuwait originally celebrated its actual independence (19 June 1961) on that date, but an Amiri decree issued on 18 May 1964 merged the celebration with 25 February in honor of the late Emir and his role in independence, effective from 1965 onward. National Day is immediately followed by Liberation Day on 26 February, commemorating Kuwait's liberation from the Iraqi invasion in 1991; both are paid official holidays, with all sectors returning to work on 27 February.
